MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Miguel Cabrera's line drive home run in the eighth inning against Minnesota moved him into a tie with Texas star Josh Hamilton for the AL lead, bringing the first triple crown since 1967 that much closer to reality.
The blast may have been even bigger for Detroit's playoff chances.
Cabrera's home run gave the Tigers a five-run cushion they would end up needing and Justin Verlander struck out eight in seven innings in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday that gave them a two-game lead in the AL Central.
Cabrera's blast in the eighth inning off Casey Fien was his 43rd home run for the year. He also leads the AL in batting average (.327) and RBIs (136) as he looks to become the first player since 1967 to lead the league in all three categories.
"It's unbelievable what he's done this year," said Verlander, the reigning AL MVP who was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with the message "Keep the MVP in the D" and Cabrera's name on the front. "It's amazing to me how he keeps getting better. He's already the best hitter in the game and he keeps taking it to another level."
Verlander (17-8) allowed four hits and one unearned run to drop his ERA to 2.64 for the Tigers, who had to sweat out another close one.
Cabrera's homer proved to be a big one after Ryan Doumit hit a grand slam off of Joaquin Benoit in the eighth.
Al Alburquerque helped the Detroit bullpen do what it couldn't do against the lowly Twins on Friday night ? finish the game. Jose Valverde picked up his 33rd save. Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks also went deep for Detroit.
Chicago lost to Tampa Bay 10-4 moments before the final out of the Tigers game.
"I want to talk about the team," Cabrera said respectfully. "There's too many distractions right now and been talking too much about triple crowns. I pull too much attention. I don't want to do that. I want to go out there and play my game."
P.J. Walters (2-5) gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings for the Twins. Joe Mauer went 0 for 3 with two walks, dropping his average to .320.
One day after Detroit lost a game of cushion to the White Sox when reliever Brayan Villarreal couldn't find the plate in the eighth inning of a 4-2 loss to the lowly Twins, Verlander came out determined to make sure the Tigers kept the pressure on Chicago.
"That was a huge game for us," manager Jim Leyland said. "You look at the scoreboard and see the White Sox most likely are going to lose. That's a game you've got to win."
With a free and easy delivery, the right-hander kept his fastball at 93 or 94 mph while keeping the Twins off balance with an array of off-speed pitches. He started to ramp things up in the fourth when he blew Justin Morneau away with consecutive fastballs of 98 and 99 and hit 100 later in the inning.
It wasn't just Verlander's dazzling stuff that gave the Twins hitters problems. The afternoon shadows at Target Field make it very difficult for hitters to pick up the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand and often contributes to slow days for the offense.
That appeared to be the case early for Cabrera as well, who was befuddled by Walters. The slugger struck out in his first two at-bats and flew out to right in his third. Cabrera entered the day leading Mauer by five points in the batting race, Hamilton by eight in the RBI race, but trailing Hamilton by one in homers.
So will he be watching Hamilton down the stretch?
"I'll let you guys keep Hamilton in your eyes," Cabrera said. "I'll go to the hotel and get some breakfast tomorrow and try to win tomorrow."
The bigger prize, of course, is the division title. Neither the Tigers nor the Sox will qualify for one of two wild cards in the American League, so their only way in is through the division door.
"The last couple weeks, there's too much attention right now," Cabrera said of the triple crown. "I don't like too much of that stuff. But it's always good. You've got to feel comfortable with that. You've got to feel positive and be ready to play."
NOTES: Verlander left with nobody out in the eighth after Denard Span reached on an error, marking just the fourth time all season he's been taken out in the middle of an inning. ... One night after making a costly error late in a 4-2 loss to the Twins, Fielder was sharp at 1B, making a quick decision on a hot grounder from Jamey Carroll in the fifth. Fielder threw to third base and Cabrera chased Trevor Plouffe down to get the lead runner. ... Plouffe snapped an 0-for-18 skid with a double in the fifth inning. ... The Tigers will send RHP Anibal Sanchez (4-6, 3.95) to the mound for the series finale against Twins RHP Liam Hendriks (1-8, 6.09). Sanchez is coming off of his first shutout in more than a year, a three-hitter against Kansas City that put the Tigers into a tie for first place.

The Broncos are fairly healthy with the exception of safety Quinton Carter, who is out, and guard Chris Kuper, listed as doubtful.
Chargers at Chiefs
Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is out again this week while tackle Jared Gaither has climbed the ladder to questionable while dealing with his ever-present back injury. 49ers at Jets
The 49ers continue to list running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Ted Ginn as questionable, just as they have before they?ve missed the team?s other games this season. Cornerback Darrelle Revis is out (and will be until his triumphant return for the Super Bowl) and wide receiver Stephen Hill is listed as doubtful, although you can go ahead and downgrade him based on Rex Ryan?s assessment of his chances of playing. Tight end Dustin Keller and linebacker Bryan Thomas, who have each missed the last two games, are questionable.
Seahawks at Rams
Seattle listed guard John Moffitt as doubtful and linebacker LeRoy Hill is questionable. The Rams will have another game-time decision with running back Steven Jackson and rookie defensive tackle Michael Brockers could make his regular season debut after missing the first three games with an ankle injury.
Titans at Texans
Tennessee wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook are both questionable, although Cook was the only one to practice at all this week. The Texans listed wide receiver Lestar Jean as out and they have a slew of players, including quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster, as probable.
Redskins at Buccaneers
Cornerback Cedric Griffin is out for the Redskins while wide receiver Pierre Gar?on and tackle Trent Williams have both been listed as questionable. The Buccaneers will be without cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise injury free.

The Giants won?t have tackle David Diehl again this week and cornerback Jayron Hosley and linebacker Keith Rivers have also been ruled out. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is doubtful and likely to miss a second straight game. Demetress Bell will start at left tackle for the Eagles in place of King Dunlap, but wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and defensive end Trent Cole are both probable for the game.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who has poured millions into GOP coffers, also bankrolls a pro-Netanyahu Israeli newspaper that could transform the media market.

Casino?mogul Sheldon Adelson grabbed the spotlight in the US earlier this year for making multi-million dollar campaign contributions to Republican presidential candidates on the bet that their policies would better jibe with those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu than with President Obama's.?
Click Here for your FREE 30 DAYS of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly Digital Edition
In Israel, Mr. Adelson is better known as the force behind the five-year-old free newspaper, "Yisrael Hayom" (Israel Today), which is seen by some as the Israeli print equivalent of Fox News. Touting Israeli patriotism, it is among the most widely read newspapers in the country and has a reputation for its fiercely loyal coverage of Mr. Netanyahu ? and now Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Adelson rejects accusations of bias, insisting in a previous interview that his paper is a "fair and balanced" alternative to other newspapers more critical of the government and that he is breaking rival newspaper Yediot Ahranot's monopoly on the market. Many Israelis nonetheless see the paper as a political vehicle to support the prime minster, and now, American Republican politicians. And with other newspapers floundering financially while Adelson puts his substantial wealth behind Yisrael Hayom, some worry that he is squeezing other political ideologies out of the market.?
"You can see completely biased coverage always emphasizing good news for the Republicans, or always hiding or eliminating bad news for the Republicans," says Oren Persico, who writes a daily analysis of print news coverage for Israel?s media magazine "The Seventh Eye." "It's one-sided, so Israelis will stand behind Romney."
An opinion poll conducted by?Hebrew University and?released yesterday showed Mr. Romney with an eight percentage point advantage?over Mr. Obama among Israelis ? 34 percent to 26 percent, with 20 percent undecided. Another opinion poll from earlier this month suggested that the gap was more than two to one.?
While it is impossible to discern the exact role Yisrael Hayom plays in shaping those opinions, its critical take on Obama and its upbeat coverage of the Republican campaign stand out from the rest of Israeli media coverage of US politics.?
For example, the day after the Romney campaign was rocked by a video of the candidate making disparaging remarks about Americans who pay no income tax, Yisrael Hayom featured a front page opinion piece alleging the US is a declining empire and?accusing Obama of "voluntarily lowering the profile"?of the US and fueling unrest in Arab countries. The story about the video was on page 23.?
A day later, the newspaper wrote in a subhead that "commentators think the affair will help" and quoted conservative columnist Ann Coulter saying that Romney comments were on the mark. Today the newspaper acknowledged that the video is having a negative impact on public opinion of Romney, but cited "optimism from surveys" indicating that the Republican candidate remains close in the polls, despite the uproar.
Yisrael Hayom is not the only paper that comes across as promoting a particular political agenda in Israel. News coverage in the liberal newspaper Haaretz, for example, is known to be sympathetic to the US president and heavily critical of Netanyahu.?But critics of Yisrael Hayom say the fact that the paper has never reported a profit is further evidence that the goal of the paper is primarily political rather than a business enterprise.?
Nahum Barnea, an Israel Prize laureate columnist who works for rival newspaper Yediot Ahronot, has denounced Yisrael Hayom as a paper with no business model that serves the interest of "one man" and is undermining Israeli democracy by making it impossible for for-profit newspapers to compete.
And as Yisrael Hayom has surged in readers, other Israeli papers that need to make money in order to stay afloat have struggled ? yesterday, the cash-strapped daily newspaper Ma?ariv?was sold to Shlomo Ben Zvi, the owner of another right wing newspaper, who announced plans to lay off most of the staff.?
"For many years, the media was dominated by left-of-center views and families supporting the Labor party," says Mitchell Barak, an Israeli pollster. But today the paper?s sympathetic coverage of US Republicans?has a natural audience in Israel, he says.?
"In general, Israelis have been disappointed with the promise and hope of Obama. That?s not specific to Yisrael Hayom."

BEIRUT (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI has appealed for religious freedom in the Middle East, calling it fundamental for stability in a region bloodied by sectarian strife.
The pope spoke Saturday at the presidential palace on the second day of his visit to Lebanon, the country with the largest percentage of Christians in the Middle East.
He said religious freedom was a "fundamental right" and held up Lebanon as an example for coexistence in the region.
Enthusiastic crowds lined the streets and cheered along the 30-kilometer (20-mile) motorcade route to the palace as Benedict went by in the bullet-proof glass popemobile. Soldiers on horseback rode ahead of the car.
Benedict arrived in Lebanon Friday amid a wave of violent protests across the Middle East over an anti-Islam film.
A recent court decision will make it easier for many individuals to qualify as real estate professionals for purposes of the IRS passive loss rules. This will enable more landlords to fully deduct their losses from real estate rentals.
The passive loss rules (?PAL rules?) are one of the most confusing areas of taxation. Under these rules, losses from real property rentals are classified as ?passive activity losses.? These rules permit a rental property to deduct from his other non-passive income, such as salary or other business income, a maximum of $25,000 each year; and even this is phased out if the owner?s adjust gross income exceeds $100,000. Unused losses must be saved for future years.
Luckily for real estate professionals, they can qualify for a special exemption from the passive loss rules ? an exemption nobody else can get. If you qualify, you may deduct any amount of rental activity losses you have for the year from your other income ? such as real estate commission income ? regardless of how high your income for the year may be.
To qualify as a real estate professional, you (or your spouse, if you file a joint return) must:
spend more than half of your working hours during the year working in one or more real property businesses, and
you (or your spouse, if you file a joint return) must spend more than 751 hours a year in one or more real property businesses in which you materially participate.
A real property business includes any real property development, redevelopment, construction, reconstruction, acquisition, conversion, rental, operation, management, leasing, or brokerage business.
Coming up with all these hours working in real estate can be very difficult for people who have other jobs. Indeed, it?s virtually impossible for a person with a full-time jot to qualify as a real estate professional under the PAL rules.
However, a?Sept. 12 decision?by the United States Tax Court makes it easier for some real estate pros to accumulate enough hours.
Fred Chambers, a civilian Navy employee, individually owned a rental property that produced losses. He also was a member and manager of a Tennessee LLC that owned several rental properties. The LLC also produced losses, 33 percent of which were allocated to Chambers. The only way Chambers could deduct all these losses from his active employee income was to qualify as a real estate professional.
To establish sufficient hours to qualify as a real estate professional, Chambers counted the time he spent managing his individually owned property and the time he spend managing the LLC.
The IRS argued that he shouldn?t have counted the LLC time because the LLC was a limited partnership for tax purposes and Chambers functioned as a limited partner. The PAL rules provide that all limited partnership interests are passive and thus time managing them can?t be used for purposes of the real estate professional exemption.
However, the Tax Court held that Chambers could count the hours he spent on the LLC in his total real estate professional hours.
The court held that Chambers should be viewed as a general partner because (1) under Tennessee laws LLC members may participate in management of the LLC, and (2) Chambers was required to participate in its management under the articles of organization and in fact did so.
Because Chambers established that he materially participated in the LLC, he could count the hours spent working on it for purposes of the real estate professional test (Chambers v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, T.C. Summ. Op. 2012-91)
Unfortunately, even counting his LLC hours, Chambers was unable to qualify as a real estate professional. However, under this case, others who actively manage one or more LLCs that own real estate can count the hours they spend to help them qualify as real estate professionals.

The change, which takes effect this weekend, comes after years of bitter back and forth between the world's largest online mall and the California Legislature over whether Internet retailers should have to charge sales tax. The two sides reached a deal in 2011 that included a one-year grace period set to end Saturday.
The deadline has spurred at least some consumers into impulse-buying mode, making big-ticket purchases and stocking up on essentials before the tax collection kicks in.
"Even the mailroom is laughing at me," said Derek Daniels, 37, who has had Amazon packages delivered to his Los Angeles office every day this week. He's loading up on household supplies like trash bags and collecting birthday and Christmas presents for his Superman-loving 2 year-old.
"We are hoping he won't fall in love with Batman by the time November rolls around," Daniels said.
The looming deadline prompted San Diego artist John Purlia to finally buy that Samsung flat-screen television that had been sitting in his Amazon shopping cart for months. He also picked up four CDs, an external hard drive and an oddly decorated $17.99 kitchen cutting-board ? a gag gift for his sister.
"The TV was the motivating factor and the other stuff came along for the ride," said Purlia, 52. "I know I'm going to be back at Amazon before Saturday looking to take advantage of this. It's like the final days of a sale."
Technically, Purlia and Daniels owe taxes on all of this: California residents are supposed to calculate their obligation and send it directly to the state. But fewer than 1 percent do, according to the Franchise Tax Board.
Lawmakers have long complained that the increasingly popular e-retailer was depriving the state of millions of dollars by refusing to charge taxes at checkout. But Amazon said it was shielded by a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits states from forcing businesses without a physical presence in the area to collect sales tax.
The e-commerce giant said it did not have a physical presence in California because it does not have warehouses or other buildings here.
Similar fights have played out in other states, with Amazon sometimes shuttering distribution centers and canceling contracts to be able to continue selling tax-free goods.
Now Amazon is making treaties across the country, paving the way to start opening warehouses and offering faster shipping in areas where tax disputes had previously prevented it from putting down roots. The company now collects sales taxes on orders shipped to seven states, including New York and Texas, and has agreed to start imposing levies in six more.
The resolution of Amazon's tax fight in California has allowed the company to start building a network of distribution centers. Soon, customers in the nation's most populous state will receive shipments from warehouses in San Bernardino, which is near Los Angeles, and Patterson, near the San Francisco Bay Area ? instead of from Reno, Nev. or Phoenix. Each new center is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to California, where the unemployment rate is the third highest in the nation.
The new warehouses will shrink delivery times and may one day enable Amazon to offer some customers here same-day shipping, as it does in 10 U.S. cities, including Boston and Seattle.
That is the Holy Grail for hardcore online shoppers like San Francisco product manager Reid Butler.
"For me, most my friends and family, same-day delivery could be a big blow to our retailers down the street," said Butler, 32.
As the tax deadline nears, Butler is stocking up on enough soap, printer ink and baby formula to last until the day he can scan a barcode in the morning and receive his toilet paper that afternoon.
The brick-and-mortar stores that pushed for the "Amazon tax" to level the business playing field hope the changes will end the dispiriting practice of "showrooming," when people browse electronics or books in a store but make their purchases online.
"It will remove one incentive for not buying local," California Retailers Association president Bill Dombrowski said. "Retailers are looking forward to it, but we don't go out and buy champagne on September 15."
Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Baird Equity Research, predicts Amazon will be able to make up for the loss in sales tax advantage by carpeting the state with distribution centers.
"The irony in this is the closer Amazon gets to its customers, the more success it seems to have," he said.
Amazon spokesman Scott Stanzel said the company will continue to offer lower prices, even without the sales tax advantage, and is not worried about losing business. He would not say whether the tax deadline has affected sales.
More change may be on the way. Amazon is lobbying Congress to cut through the web of state-specific rules and devise a national policy for Internet taxation.
Sales tax rates in California reach 9.75 percent and are among the highest in the country. The new rules, which may affect more than 200 out-of-state businesses, are expected to bring in more than $200 million annually, with at least $80 million coming from Amazon alone.
California's tax authority is preparing to hire 30 specialists to make sure the state collects the revenue it is due. Jerome Horton, chairman of the state Board of Equalization, said the change will allow out of state companies to "contribute their fair share" toward schools and other public services.
Amazon has been tax-free for nearly two decades; an adult lifetime for some customers.
Amateur photographer Joe Chin, 27, saved more than a hundred dollars last week when he used Amazon to buy a $1,400 Fujifilm digital camera. A world without tax-free shopping will be an adjustment, he said.
"It's kind of like going back to how it was when I was a kid," he said.

Recipients honored for their work on glowing jellyfish, radiation waves, and tropical coral
Eight scientists, including four Nobel Prize winners, will be honored today with the first annual Golden Goose Awards, celebrating researchers whose seemingly odd or obscure federally funded research turned out to have a significant impact on society.
The awardees will be honored at a ceremony on Capitol Hill, where they will receive their awards from a bipartisan group of Members of Congress. The scientists are:
- Charles Townes, a physicist whose work in the 1950s led to the invention of laser technology, which at the time had no known application, but without which much of modern technology would be impossible. His work earned him a Nobel Prize in 1964.
- Eugene White, Rodney White, Della Roy, and the late Jon Weber, whose study of tropical coral in the 1960s led serendipitously to the development of an ideal bone graft material that is used commonly in surgery today. (Dr. Roy cannot be present for the ceremony.)
- Martin Chalfie, Roger Tsien, and Osamu Shimomura, whose research, following Dr. Shimomura's work on how certain jellyfish glow in the dark, led to numerous medical research advances and to methods used widely by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. They won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2008. (Dr. Shimomura cannot be present for the ceremony.)
The purpose of the Golden Goose Award is to demonstrate the human and economic benefits of federally funded research by highlighting examples of seemingly obscure or unusual studies that have led to major breakthroughs and have had a significant impact on society. Such breakthroughs may include development of life-saving medicines and treatments; game-changing social and behavioral insights; and major technological advances related to national security, energy, the environment, communications, and public health.
The Golden Goose Award was originally the idea of Representative Jim Cooper (D-TN). It was created and jointly launched by a coalition of organizations, listed below, which believe that federally funded basic scientific research is the cornerstone of American innovation and essential to our economic growth, health, global competitiveness, and national security. The award recipients were selected by a panel of respected scientists and university research leaders, also listed below.
Reflecting on the award, Representative Cooper said, "We should honor, not mock, scientists. Like the fabled golden goose, today's awardees gave unexpected gifts to mankind. Budget cutbacks must be made, but science should be spared."
Rep. Cooper and other Democratic and Republican Members of Congress who support the Golden Goose Award are expected to speak and hand out the awards at today's ceremony.
Speaking on behalf of the sponsoring organizations, Dr. Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, added, "The unexpected benefits of basic research have been huge, a point well-demonstrated by the work of the first Golden Goose awardees."
