Finnish lawmakers OK boosting euro bailout fund (AP)

HELSINKI ? Parliament on Wednesday approved expanding the eurozone's bailout fund's powers and increasing Finland's share to euro14 billion ($19 billion).

Lawmakers voted 103-66 in favor of the government motion with 31 absent or abstaining. The approval had been expected as the six-party government has a majority in the 200-member Parliament with 126 seats.

Finland is part of the 17-nation eurozone and its approval is required on bailouts and other help for cash-strapped eurozone members. Under the new law, the bailout fund will be able to buy government bonds and lend money to a country before it is in a full-blown crisis.

The measures were agreed at a July 21 summit of eurozone leaders but do not take effect until ratified by national parliaments.

Finland had earlier agreed to a euro7.9 billion share of the euro440 billion fund.

The limited size of the eurozone fund has unsettled markets since much of the money is already committed to the Greek, Irish and Portuguese bailouts. European officials have said they are not willing to enlarge it although there has been talk of increasing its firepower through use of financial leveraging.

Europe's debt crisis worsened sharply in early August, and the European Central Bank had to intervene with the drastic step of buying government bonds. That forced down the interest costs faced by Italy and Spain and kept them from being cut off from borrowing at affordable interest rates.

Being Prepared For The Hunt | Recreation and Sports Info

When you plan on spending a day in the field, one of the most important things that you need to consider is that you are well prepared for the day. Having the right kind of hunting supplies with you can make the difference between you being comfortable and having an enjoyable day or being uncomfortable and perhaps wishing you had stayed at home. Although there certainly are a number of things for you to consider, one of the items that you should never leave home is your pack and your knife. Here is what to consider with these two important items.

As far as the pack is concerned, Badlands Packs is perhaps one of the better choices that you have available to you. This is not only because of the fact that they help you to have almost anything that you might need with you, but it is also because of the diversity that they offer. For example, there are packs that are available from Badlands that are waterproof, those that are simply a game vest and others that are a large backpack which can be used for a single day or even a multi-day trip into the field.

As far as the knife that you?re going to carry, Havalon Knives are those that you may want to consider. Perhaps some of the more popular uses of these types of knives is for skinning game, and many people enjoy taking this particular type of knife along with them into the field so that they have it available after a successful hunt.

India has developed the cheapest computer hardware of the world that costs $ 30, which must be given to one million students in 2011, and the price of hardware should be reduced to 20 $ and beyond. What is cheaper computer technology and latest computer? Currently, India?s computer with 1 GHz processor, memory, 128MB RAM, 40GB hard drive memory and color-monitor-15 inches is available from HCl for approximately 200 $ .

The cheapest computer is no bigger than a normal laptop, is a unitary system with a touch screen and an integrated key board with 2GB of RAM, wireless connectivity, USB and powered by 2 watts system according. Charging computer through the solar system is being integrated. In efforts to provide high-tech learning, this computer will be useful to students and small business houses who can not afford a computer with high-tech expensive. In addition to the new computer, a database is created to provide Indian students with useful information that will be available through an inter-institutional.

This computer developed by India would also be considerably cheaper than ?$ 100 laptop, lime green computer known as the XO computer for children, which was designed by scientists at the Institute Technology, Massachusetts United States. Some computer experts doubt that a $ 30 computer is not commercially viable. Some say you can not even make a good computer monitor for $ 30. And India is not building hub of computer hardware.

]]>

Although half of India?s 1.20 billion people are under the age of 25, the country has fallen behind in terms of computer hardware, computer technology and internet facility to its students in 18,000 colleges and 400 universities across India. India has a reputation for creating ultra-cheap technology, for example is set by the Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world at $ 2,000.

A group of engineers from the Indian Institute of Engineering, India have developed cheaper computer this world. The cheapest computer that meets the needs of students and small businesses and industry is developed in the framework of information and communication technologies in the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development.

It uses the Linux operating system and comes with a touch screen. The device can be connected to an external keyboard and monitor and is equipped with Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet. The Indian government has given its approval for its one million products. The government has also invited India- Private partnership to produce similar low-cost computers.

The main features of the computer the cheapest $ 30 developed by engineers from the Indian Institute of Engineering, India is also under.
1. Before the computer, the cheapest hardware that could be done was $ 60 to 70, which is now been reduced to $ 30.
2. The hardware is $ 30 and product of the engineers of the Indian Institute of Engineering and received the full support of Indian government; even an order for 1 million was placed.
3. This computer is thin like a box of pencils and as wide and long as a box of Tiffin children in schools and is very mobile.
4. The hardware specifications, it has an interface with touch screen input with a number of buttons for home, power management, selection and expansion, in-built WIFI support wireless internet, it has a VGA camera integrated in the front. It has a USB connection and audio output for connecting different devices with it. It has built in providing battery charging solar energy.
5. The processing speed of this device is suitable because it can run both Linux and OS Goggle Android is free and open source.
6. It is very useful for university students in Normal that can happen to surf the Web and all its features such as mail and video calling etc. It can also help as it can act as an e-book reader for everything there are digital books and study materials.
7.There are some limitations of this device may get better in time, first touch screen devices is not very sensitive to the use, the device lacks processing power to run the right way multimedia materials for students to learn or study purposes, the device may require more storage space because it has a very limited storage unit.
8 But overall for the price it is available; it is a very useful and impressive equipment to use as anyone can now easily afford a computing device at hand.

(AP) ? Over months, Venezuelan TV soap opera writer Leonardo Padron built a Twitter following of about 250,000 people by posting more than a dozen messages a day, many of them skewering President Hugo Chavez.

On Aug. 29, Padron issued a typical shot: "Chavez knows of the immense death toll that there is in this country, so why such indifference to the subject of insecurity?"

Three days later, however, the tweets picked a new target: Padron himself. "In no way have I contributed to combat racism, discrimination, cultural alienation," one note read. "My soap operas feed these evils in our society."

Padron had fallen victim to an unknown hacker or group of hackers who have hijacked the accounts of at least nine well-known Chavez critics, posting curse-filled insults, threats and slogans such as "Long live Chavez."

One late-night post called a journalist a homosexual, and another threatened a Chavez opponent: "I'm going after you little by little, Damned Narco." Doctored photos show opponents wearing red berets of the sort favored by the socialist leader.

The burst of Twitter hacking has opened a new battlefield in Venezuela's heated political wars. Some Chavez critics say their email accounts have also been compromised.

A group calling itself "N33" has claimed responsibility for the Twitter attacks, and those targeted have had "N33" appear on their Twitter profiles.

All sorts of theories have been circulating about who is behind N33, ranging from Chavez allies to opponents trying to make the government look bad. Some wonder if it could be a single young hacker trying to make a statement.

Padron heard from an acquaintance that his account was sending out insults. He had been wondering why he wasn't able to sign in to Twitter. Suddenly, it was clear: Someone had stolen his password and shut him out.

"It's an invasion, a humiliation. It's as if you're about to go into your house and the door doesn't open with your key, and you sense there's someone inside posing as you," Padron told The Associated Press in an interview.

"You don't imagine that your 2.0 life is going to be stolen, that your voice is going to be expropriated," Padron said. "Of course, I began to have a very strong feeling of indignation."

Other victims of the attacks this month have included an activist, a humorist, three journalists, a TV show host, an ex-diplomat and a former Chavez supporter, all of them openly critical of Chavez.

Some of the victims have complained to authorities. Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz said that two prosecutors are collecting evidence and will talk to witnesses.

Both Twitter and Google say the attacks most likely involved phishing, a form of Internet fraud in which victims are tricked into revealing passwords or other personal information through emails with links to pages that appear to be authentic. Once a victim enters a password for Twitter or an email account on a fraudulent page, hackers are able to use it to take over the real account and change the password.

About 2 million Venezuelans, or 8 percent of the population, are Twitter users, according to figures by the local research company Tendencias Digitales. That gives Venezuela the second highest Twitter penetration in the region, after Uruguay.

Chavez's opponents regularly use the social networking site to spread critical commentary, while the government goes on Twitter to promote its policies and attack opponents. Chavez's Twitter account, chavezcandanga, reached the milestone of 2 million followers on Aug. 31.

That very day, the attacks by N33 began. In a Sept. 2 statement posted on the Internet, it called itself a group without links to "any government entity."

The statement was read aloud on state television by the host of the late night talk show La Hojilla, or "The Razor," a program that often denounces Chavez opponents.

In the statement, N33 said it had hijacked accounts to retaliate for "improper use of Twitter" and for attacking Chavez while he undergoes cancer treatment. It said Chavez's "convalescence hasn't been enough of a reason for these opposition characters ... to diminish their load of rage and bad intentions."

N33 has also taken over Gmail accounts, usually at night, stealing personal messages and photos and posting them on Twitter.

While the attacks on Twitter accounts died down after the first week of September, N33 continued posting items extracted from email accounts on a Twitter account, Cain_Supremo, until that account was suspended by Twitter. Another account has since appeared purporting to represent N33.

Activist Rocio San Miguel, whose Twitter account was taken over, also saw her personal photos and documents as well as insults and threats against her appear on the N33 Twitter feed.

"It's a feeling of powerlessness," San Miguel told the AP. "Without a doubt, they want to frighten and intimidate."

San Miguel leads an organization focused on national security and defense issues, and she likened the attacks to a sort of terrorism, saying they seem aimed at making an example of certain government critics to inhibit others.

Padron said it took him three days to block his own account. He also had to recoup email accounts that had been seized.

One of pirate posts on Padron's Twitter account sent greetings to the website "Table of Scorpions," a similarly mysterious, unsigned blog that has posted recorded phone conversations of opposition politicians.

Venezuelan law imposes prison sentences for cyber-spying or accessing others' accounts, and one 17-year-old Venezuelan was arrested four years ago for hacking into government websites. He was later released and the status of his case is unclear.

Twitter said that phishing schemes are a leading hazard.

"Most attempts to gain access to accounts target users by sending them fraudulent messages meant to trick them into sharing their passwords," Twitter spokeswoman Kristen Hawley said in an email. "A personal email account that's compromised is the second most likely way an intruder gains access to Twitter accounts."

Rafael Nunez, a Venezuelan online security expert who has experience as a hacker, noted that while N33 describes itself as a group, many of its messages are written in the first person. One such message on Twitter boasted: "I've got you going crazy."

"It's a single virtual speaker, but behind that speaker there could be collaborators," said Nunez, who heads the Venezuelan information security company Clean Perception.

Nunez was imprisoned in the United States for more than eight months in 2005 for hacking a Defense Department website and was later released. He calls himself an "ethical hacker" who saw hacking as a challenge and now uses his knowledge to improve online security.

After studying some of the latest attacks, Nunez said N33 apparently gained access to Gmail accounts by phishing for passwords or using software that enabled keystroke logging.

Nunez said he doesn't know of other countries where Twitter accounts have been similarly taken over in such a systematic way.

As for who might be behind it, Nunez said there are only theories for now.

"The language is very immature," Nunez said. "It's like a kid."

'Treasure Island' paintings on display in exhibit

A century after N.C. Wyeth's illustrations of the pirates and scalawags of "Treasure Island" first appeared, the iconic images considered the definitive version of the classic tale are reunited for the first time since their completion.

The Brandywine River Museum has reassembled them in a new exhibit marking the 100th anniversary of Wyeth's "Treasure Island" and the 40th anniversary of the museum, not far from an old carriage house where Wyeth created the 17 large oils on canvas for publishing house Charles Scribner's Sons. The only painting not in the exhibit was destroyed in a fire in 1952.

Scribner's displayed the paintings in their New York bookstore and sold several, but the bulk of the paintings are owned either by the museum or the Wyeth family. The New York Public Library owns two, one is in private hands and one is owned by the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut.

"From his correspondence, we found that these paintings were done in about 3 1/2 months, which is an incredibly rapid pace," curator Christine Podmaniczky said. "He didn't make drawings of everything first, worked spontaneously right on the canvas."

Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 book was already a favorite of readers and critics when the story was published with Wyeth's illustrations in 1911. Where earlier editions typically featured basic line drawings to illustrate the coming-of-age adventure, Wyeth's spirited and colorful depictions of Long John Silver, Jim Hawkins, Billy Bones and company became an instant hit.

The first print run of about 10,000 copies quickly sold out. The book's success marked the start of a long relationship between Wyeth and Scribner's that led to a popular series of Wyeth-illustrated children's classics.

Scribner's paid $2,500 for "Treasure Island," which Wyeth used to buy 18 picturesque acres along the Brandywine River Valley. There he built a home and studio where generations of Wyeths began their art training including his son, famed realist Andrew Wyeth, and grandson, contemporary painter Jamie Wyeth.

N.C. Wyeth was at the height of his artistic powers with "Treasure Island," which used neighbors and acquaintances as models for the striking 3-by-4-foot works ? unusually large considering they were being reduced to around 6 inches tall. Wyeth made the works based not on characters but passages he thought would visually translate, Podmaniczky said.

"It's not so much the facial features he was concerned with, but creating a sense of energy and motion," she said. "He was also a master colorist and he could do wonderful things with light and shadow."

The exhibition also presents some Treasure Island productions created by the illustrators, theater and film directors and even digital application designers who used Wyeth's work as references.

A 1916 silent movie of "Treasure Island" modeled its costumes and character types after Wyeth's work and actor Lionel Barrymore said in a newspaper interview that his portrayal of Billy Bones was inspired by Wyeth's archetype. Visitors to the exhibit can also see how Disney animators interpreted Wyeth's style for 1950's "Treasure Island" as well as the futuristic "Treasure Planet" from 2002.

"No director had a finer production illustrator than N.C. Wyeth," director Fraser Heston says in a letter included in the exhibit. The son of Charlton Heston, he based his "Treasure Island" storyboards on Wyeth's work for a 1989 movie starring his father as peg-legged pirate Long John Silver.

The exhibit is on view until Nov. 20.

Amongst the 2, type 2 is the most common and is due to obesity and other lifestyle factors.

Diabetes is confirmed through a series of test. Primarily, the most common diagnostic test is FBS or fasting Blood sugar. Blood samples are taken early in the morning after the patient is on NPO or nothing by mouth after 12 midnight. When the patient?s glucose level is above 120 mg/dl, then they suspect diabetes. There are other tests to be taken to confirm the condition like Oral Glucose tolerance test, and random plasma glucose test. Once affirmative, during the follow up check-up, the doctors will know if the patient is adhering towards the treatment plan by ordering Glucocylated Hemogobin.

There are many health articles related to diabetes because it is a lifelong problem proper care and management should be done because if not, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, a diabetic foot-which can be amputated and many other problems. In order to avoid these problems, it is essential to eat the right kinds of food as taught by the dietician. Reduce the carbohydrate intake and avoid eating too many sweets. It is also important to have a time table when eating so that the patient won?t experience hypoglycemia since medicines like insulin and anti-diabetic drugs will be taken.

Apart from that, exercising should also be done. When the body moves, this burns the fats and converts sugar into energy. It also helps the insulin to be absorbed in the body. The patient does not have to go to the gym and lift weights. Walking and jogging can be done and the patient can sweat. Medications should always be taken on time especially with insulin. This drug is important to every diabetes patient so it should be stored properly and expired drugs should be properly disposed. Also, reading health articles related to the disease is suggested to know the updates.

Fresh fighting erupts as Saleh returns to Yemen

President Ali Abdullah Saleh abruptly returned home to Yemen on Friday after more than three months of being treated in Saudi Arabia for wounds from an assassination attempt, in a move apparently aimed to ensure his grip as his loyalists and opponents wage urban warfare in the capital.

Hours after his return, fighting intensified as government forces in armored vehicles closed in on the thousands of opposition activists in the capital's main protest camp, which had already been under heavy bombardment by mortar shells throughout the day. The bloodshed reinforced fears that Saleh's return signaled an escalation of fighting into a full-fledged attempt to crush his rivals.

The White House was blindsided by the sudden return. U.S. officials conceded it was a surprise and said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton wasn't warned of Saleh's plans when she met Tuesday in New York with the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, which has been working with Washington and Yemen to try to arrange a transfer of power.

The return could be a significant blow to those attempts. A degree of stability in the strategic but impoverished Arab nation is a priority for the United States, which wants a partner to continue the fight against one of al-Qaida's most active branches, based in Yemen and accused of plotting attacks in the U.S. Islamic militants have already exploited months of turmoil to seize control of cities in southern Yemen.

Abdullah Obal, an opposition leader, said he believed Saleh "returned to run the war and drive the country into an all-out civil war."

"The cannons are now speaking. Gunfire is doing all the talking," Obal said.

After midnight, forces from the Central Security Police, including some in armored vehicles, moved in on neighborhoods around the capital's main protest camp, known as Change Square. Thousands of protesters have held a sit-in there since the start of their movement in February.

The police waged gunbattles with an army unit that defected months ago and is guarding the protesters at the square, witnesses said. At the same time, government forces continued to lob mortar shells into the square, setting several activists' tents on fire, said protester Walid Rafei.

Throughout the day, three people were killed there, according to medic Mohammed al-Qabati.

Saleh made no immediate public appearances, but his return breathed life into the camp of his supporters who turned up in the thousands for the Friday sermon that became a massive show of faith in the country's leader for 33 years.

"We love you, Ali," chanted thousands massed on Boulevard 70, a street near the presidential compound.

The return threatens to further break open the deep divisions that have riven Yemen since the protest movement kicked off in February demanding Saleh's ouster and an end to his authoritarian regime. Saleh's security forces cracked down hard on protesters, killing hundreds, which prompted members of his government, military and allied tribes to join the opposition.

In early June, an explosion ripped through a mosque where Saleh was praying in his Sanaa presidential compound. The blast left him severely burned over much of his body and wounded with wooden shards, and nearly a dozen of his top aides were seriously wounded. Saleh has since been in Saudi Arabia for treatment.

Both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia were believed to be trying to keep Saleh from leaving Saudi Arabia, and signing onto a deal proposed by Gulf Arab states, under which he would resign and hand power to his vice president to form a national unity government in return for immunity from any prosecution.

The mercurial Saleh has repeatedly promised to sign the agreement, then refused at the last minute.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Friday, "We urge President Saleh to initiate a full transfer of power and arrange for presidential elections to be held before the end of the year within the framework" of the agreement.

"A political solution is the best way to avoid bloodshed," he said.

This week, the deadlock that endured even during Saleh's absence broke down into the worst violence in months after he recently delegated his vice president to restart negotiations with opponents on the deal. It was considered another stalling tactic by Saleh. It sparked an escalation in the protests and a violent crackdown in Sanaa and other cities.

Forces loyal to the president's son Ahmed attacked protesters in the streets and battled troops led by one of the regime's top rivals, Maj. Gen. Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a former Saleh aide who joined the opposition early in the uprising, as well as tribal fighters who back the protesters.

Around 100 people have been killed ? mostly protesters as regime troops hit their gathering with shelling or barrages of sniper fire from rooftops. Residents have been forced to hunker down in their homes or flee the city as the two sides exchanged bombardment over Sanaa from strongholds in the surrounding hills.

Saleh slipped back into the country before dawn on Friday. In a statement on the state news agency, he called for a truce, saying "the solution won't be through cannons and barrels, but through dialogue, understanding and ending the bloodshed."

But his opponents dismissed the negotiations call, convinced that Saleh has no intention to step down and aims to break his rivals with military force. Sultan al-Barkani, the head of the ruling party's bloc in parliament and a Saleh backer, told Al-Jazeera television that it was "totally unlikely" that the president will resign. "Saleh will not leave except through elections," he said.

Obal, the opposition member, blamed the U.S. and Saudi Arabia for not exerting enough pressure on Saleh to quit. He said the opposition was hardening its position in the face of Saleh's return and that any accord "can no longer give guarantees against prosecution amid all this killing."

In other violence Friday, mortar shells hit a group of anti-Saleh tribal fighters in a neighborhood where battles have raged with Saleh loyalists, killing two tribesmen.

During a brief lull in the fighting, there were mass protests by both sides.

At the opposition rally on Boulevard 60, demonstrators carried pictures of those killed in the violence as speakers urged security forces to stop killing their own people. "The people want the trial of the butcher," the crowd chanted.

Abdel-Hadi al-Azazi, a protest leader, warned that Saleh's return means "more divisions, more escalation and confrontations."

"We are on the verge of a very critical escalation," he told The Associated Press.

April Alley, a Yemen researcher with the International Crisis Group, said Saleh's surprise return put both his supporters and opponents off balance, creating an explosive situation but one with also high stakes.

"There is greater incentive to actually come through with a deal," she said, particularly as negotiations over ways to implement the power transfer had been ongoing until the recent violence.

Retired army general Ahmed Salem said Saleh, an astute military man who has balanced tribal and security loyalties for decades, will be driven by the battle cry.

"He will attempt to stop the advances of his adversaries, and will try to improve his situation on the ground," Salem said. "His return will enable his supporters, lifts their spirit after a period of confusion because of lack of political management."

Nature shows the way: Self-healing membranes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2011) ? The plant iana whose stabilization rings of woody cells heal spontaneously after suffering damage serves as a natural example to bionic experts of self-repairing membranes. Such membranes could find use, for example, in rubber dinghies. Empa researchers have borrowed this trick from nature and developed a polymer foam surface coating with a closed cell construction which not only reduces the pressure loss after the membrane is damaged but also makes the inflatable structure more resistant and giving it a longer operational life.

The scientists report on this work in the current issue of the Journal of Bionic Engineering.

A hole in an inflatable boat is only a disaster if the air escapes too quickly to reach the safety of land. It's somewhat less dramatic but nonetheless uncomfortable to spend the night on a leaky air mattress. Even in this case, though, you can get some uninterrupted sleep if only the air leaks out slowly enough. In future, self-repairing layers of porous material should ensure that the membranes of inflatable objects are not only water and airtight but also that they can plug up any holes on their own, at least temporarily.

The idea behind this comes from nature. Bionics experts keep on discovering amazing principles of construction which engineers can adopt for countless technical solutions. This is also the case with self-repairing materials. The self-healing process of the pipevine (Aristolochia macrophylla), a liana which grows in the mountain forests of North America, gave the biologists at the University of Freiburg, Germany, a decisive clue. When the lignified cells of the outer supportive tissues which give the plant its bending stiffness are damaged, the plant administers "first aid" to the wound. Parenchymal cells from the underlying base tissue expand suddenly and close the lesion from inside. Only in a later phase does the real healing process kick in and the original tissue grows back.

Self-healing inflatable structures

This principle is now being transferred to materials -- more specifically, to membranes -- in a bionics project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. As soon as a membrane suffers damage, an additional layer provides "first aid," thanks to its mechanical pre-tensioning, closing the hole until a proper repair can be made. This is analogous to the natural process which occurs in lianas. While researchers from the University of Freiburg under the direction of Olga Speck are busy studying the biological and chemical aspects of the model provided by liana plants, Rolf Luchsinger and Markus Rampf at Empa's Center for Synergetic Structures are working on technical solutions for polymer membranes. Luchsinger's impetus, however, concerns neither inflatable boats nor air mat-tresses but rather load-carrying pneumatic structures for lightweight construction. His tensairity beams serve as elements for quickly erected, lightweight bridges and roofing.

The study's goal is to understand under which conditions a hole plugs itself up if the foam expands on a membrane following damage. Within the scope of his dissertation, Rampf is studying this process with the help of an experimental setup which places a membrane under pneumatic pressure and then punctures it with a nail. The researchers have already achieved successful interim results. A two-component foam of polyurethane and polyester suddenly expands when exposed to the excessive pressure which arises when air rushes out of a hole.

"It works in the lab," notes Luchsinger, "and we're achieving high repair factors." What does this mean in the real world? Take the case of an air mattress with a volume of 200 litres. Given a certain-sized hole, previously it was necessary to pump it up every five minutes; it now holds for eight hours -- enough time to sleep through the night. "We now know enough about the foam that we can enter into discussions with membrane manufacturers about commercializing this technology," according to Luchsinger, when describing the next steps.
