Mexico: Video threatens to disclose Zetas allies

(AP) ? An Internet video is threatening Mexico's Zetas drug cartel with exposure of its allies in the local police and news media this week unless the gang frees a kidnapped member of the international hacker movement known as "Anonymous."

The YouTube message, which claims to be from Anonymous "Veracruz, Mexico and the world," says it is "tired of the criminal group the Zetas, which is dedicated to kidnapping, stealing and extortion," and threatens to fight back with information instead of weapons.

It said it knows of police officers, journalists, taxi drivers and others working with the Zetas.

The video refers to an unidentified person kidnapped in the coastal city of Veracruz, and says: "You have made a great mistake by taking one of us. Free him."

The hacker group, which has claimed responsibility for attacks on corporate and government websites worldwide, supposedly will act Friday if the kidnapped activist is not freed or is harmed, according to the message.

"We cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses, bars," the message adds, apparently alluding to properties owned by cartel supporters. "It's not difficult. We know who they are and where they are are."

"Information is free," it says. "We do not forgive. We do not forget."

An official with the Veracruz state attorney general's office, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak on the record, said the office could not confirm video's authenticity or the case of the kidnapping.

Veracruz, an oil state on the Gulf of Mexico with a major port of the same name, has seen a spike in drug violence in recent months in what authorities say is a battle between the Zetas drug cartel, which has controlled the territory for at least a year, and its rivals. Dozens of bodies have been showing up in recent weeks, including the dumping of 35 last month on a main highway in rush-hour traffic in the city of Boca del Rio.

Two other Internet postings since July have announced the arrival of group that calls itself the "Mata Zetas," or Zeta Killers, who authorities say are likely aligned with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. Others have raised questions about whether the group's members are vigilantes or other rogue bands taking justice into their own hands against the Zetas.

The new message, presented by someone wearing a theater mask that is a trademark of Anonymous, was reportedly uploaded to websites early this month, but was first reported Friday on the website of the global intelligence think tank Stratfor.

Stratfor, in its analysis of the video, said anyone exposed by Anonymous as a Zetas collaborator ? accurately or not ? would be targeted by rival gangs, and the Zetas could respond by attacking Internet activists even if they are not affiliated with Anonymous.

Three people have been killed recently in the northern states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas by suspected Zetas who apparently believed the victims used the Internet to spread information about the gang.

U.S. economy finally back to pre-recession level

U.S. economy posts 2.5 percent increase for third quarter, up from 1.3 percent in second. Biggest challenge for U.S. economy: jobs.

The U.S. economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the third quarter as consumers and businesses stepped up spending, creating momentum that could
carry into the final three months of the year.

The expansion was a welcome relief for an economy that looked on the brink of recession just weeks ago, although part of the pick-up came from a reversal of factors that held back growth earlier in the year, and analysts worry about 2012.

U.S. gross domestic product grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter, up from a 1.3 percent pace in the prior three months, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That took output back to pre-recession level.

While the growth pace matched economists' forecasts, domestic demand showed a bit more vigor than most had expected.

``The economy is now heading in the right direction and this is very encouraging, particularly given the heightened global uncertainties and the fact that other major economies appear to be heading into recessions,'' said Millan Mulraine, a senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

An agreement by European leaders to ramp up their debt crisis response combined with the data to spark a rally on Wall Street. U.S. stocks closed more than 3 percent higher.

Prices for Treasury debt fell, with benchmark yields rising to a 2-1/2-month high. The dollar recorded its biggest one-day fall against a basket of currencies in 2-1/2 years.

The GDP report could give some breathing space for Federal Reserve policymakers who meet next week to debate additional ways to help the economy and lower an unemployment rate that has been stubbornly stuck above 9 percent for five months.

The economy needs to grow at a rate of more than 2.5 percent over a sustained period to cut the jobless rate.

``The persistence of high unemployment and ongoing fragility of the economy ... will prompt the Fed to take more unconventional actions as we move into 2012,'' said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial in Chicago.

For the U.S. economy, the biggest problem is the weakness of the labor market. Inflation-adjusted disposable income fell at a rate of 1.7 percent in the third quarter -- the first decline since the fourth quarter of 2009 -- and consumers had to dip into savings to lift their spending.

``People are not doing well. I don't know anybody who's better off now than he was a year ago,'' said Jose Lopez, a 67-year-old Miami construction engineer who lost his job early this month. ``It's just the bare basics,'' he said as he emerged from a discount shopping store in West Miami.

A jump in gasoline prices had weighed on consumer spending earlier in the year, and supply disruptions from Japan's big earthquake and tsunami in March had curbed auto production.

As those factors faded, the U.S. economy perked up.

(AP) ? In the harsh, remote wilds of the Canadian tundra, a wolverine scampers up to a polar bear snoozing near the shore of the Hudson Bay. The bear rises and makes a half-hearted charge, driving away the fierce, badger-like animal.

The brief encounter Thursday was streamed live to computers around the world through a new program that aims to document in real time the annual migration of hundreds of polar bears outside Churchill, Manitoba.

The bears travel through the small town each October and November and then wait for the Hudson Bay freeze-up, when they can get out on the ice and hunt for seals. In the past, their trek was witnessed mainly by scientists and intrepid tourists.

Now, thanks to an initial $50,000 grant from the Annenberg Foundation to set up four cameras on a makeshift lodge and a roaming Tundra Buggy, plus ongoing payments for bandwidth and technical infrastructure, the bears' antics and actions at this way station can be viewed from anybody's living room through the foundation's website, www.explore.org.

"It brings the Arctic to the people," said Krista Wright, executive vice president of Polar Bears International, an advocacy group based in Bozeman, Mont. "The polar bear is the North's iconic species. This is that exotic animal that people travel from all over the world to see."

There are 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears worldwide. The Western Hudson Bay polar bears, one of 19 subpopulations, are estimated to number between 600 and 800. Their gathering point near the former military town of Churchill makes them among the most accessible and studied group of bears in existence.

Their numbers are expected to grow over the next few weeks as the weather turns colder, culminating with the bay expected to freeze around the third week of November.

The Polar Bears International camp on the tundra is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) outside of town. Each September through November, they and Frontiers North Adventures host scientists and hold webcasts for schoolchildren to give them a firsthand view of how climate change is damaging the bears' habitat.

It's unseasonably warm in Manitoba, as evidenced on the webcam by the tundra bare of snow. That raises concerns that ice will be late in forming again this year ? last year, freeze-up didn't happen until mid-December, nearly a month later than usual. That's a problem for the bears, Wright said.

"It's breaking up earlier and freezing later, so the time they're spending on land is longer. The time they're on land, they're basically fasting," she said.

Charles Annenberg Weingarten, the foundation's vice president and a trustee, said the polar bear webcam is an experiment he hopes to expand into a program called Pearls of the Planet that would place streaming cameras in various wild places.

Weingarten said a new feature will be added to the polar bear webcam soon that will allow viewers to document their observations of the polar bears on the website. The idea, he said is to encourage scientific learning, something like a Sesame Street for adults.

Cain and Romney statistically tied in new Des Moines Register Iowa poll (The Ticket)

(Chris Carlson/AP)

Herman Cain and Mitt Romney are statistically tied for the lead in Iowa's Republican presidential primary race, according to a new Des Moines Register poll of likely caucus-goers in the state.

The Register survey, long considered the most reliable of Iowa polls, finds the former Godfather's Pizza executive with 1-point advantage in the state, leading the former Massachusetts governor 23 percent to 22 percent.

Ron Paul trailed in third place, with 12 percent support. The remaining 2012 hopefuls were in single digits, including Michele Bachmann (8 percent); Rick Perry (7 percent); Newt Gingrich (7 percent); Rick Santorum (5 percent) and Jon Huntsman (1 percent).

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.

Cain's popularity has soared in the state, in spite of the fact he's done little actual campaigning there. But Romney's numbers are equally surprising, given the ex-governor has visited the state just three times since launching his second White House bid this spring.

(AP) ? Defenses shielding the center of Thailand's capital from the nation's worst floods in nearly 60 years mostly held at critical peak tides Saturday, as the waters began to recede after killing almost 400 people. But the threat to central Bangkok was not over, the prime minister said, and the city's northern districts remained submerged along with much of the countryside.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urged citizens to let the crisis run its course as the floodwaters slowly drain to the sea, with Bangkok lying in their path. The floods that have besieged central Thailand for weeks submerged entire towns across the country's heartland and shuttered hundreds of factories over the last two months.

"We have the good news that the situation in the central region has improved as runoff water gradually decreased," she said. "I thank people and urge them to be more patient in case this weekend is significant because of the high tide."

Bangkok residents watched the city's dikes and sandbag barriers warily as the high tide pushing up the Chao Phraya River from the Gulf of Thailand peaked Saturday morning. It had been described as the greatest test of the capital's flood defenses since the northern deluge first approached Bangkok more than three weeks ago.

While some water doused streets and shops along the river, the tides fell short of forecast highs and there was no major breach. Higher than usual tides will continue through Monday, but are predicted to be lower than Saturday's.

City official Adisak Kantee said the city's concrete barriers "are efficiently protecting Bangkok from deluge," though he said smaller, private dikes might yet fail.

"The situation is so far under control," he said.

Yingluck said in her weekly radio address the government was trying to speed the drainage rate and water in the greater Bangkok area should recede within days.

While downtown Bangkok were bone-dry and bustling, areas along the city's outskirts saw flooding spread. Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts ? all in the northern and western outskirts ? are heavily inundated. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding.

In the city's west, not far from the flooded district of Bang Phlat, workers filled sandbags and stacked them in pickup trucks for delivery to the front lines, while vendors did booming trade in life vests, plastic boats, styrofoam and anything else that floated. With many roads in the area submerged, traffic was heavy both heading in and out of the city.

Thousands of Bangkok residents used a special five-day holiday to leave town, wary at confusing warnings about the flood threat and others concerned about sparse supplies in stores due to weeks of panic buying and flood-related distribution problems.

Bangkok Gov. Sukhumbhand Paribatra highlighted another threat: sanitation. He ordered boats to collect uncollected garbage in a flooded district where most places were inaccessible by truck.

On Saturday, the Flood Relief Operations Center moved from its base at Don Muang airport after a power transformer malfunctioned. The airport, mainly used for domestic flights, closed Tuesday because of flooding on the runways and surrounding streets.

While many in Bangkok will be breathing somewhat easier now that the highest of tides has passed, there was no complacency in the Sam Sen area, where a floodwall burst Saturday morning under the pressure from the surging water. Residents and soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder in the churning torrents trying to plug the gap and get the flow under control.

At the nearby Boonchuay boxing camp, a handful of Muay Thai fighters went through their afternoon workout, sparring in a ring surrounded by the overflow of the Chao Phraya river. The camp's well-worn heavy bags dangled inches above the murky floodwaters, while the weight machines sat submerged up to their seats, rendering them unusable.

Don Krasaein, a junior lightweight fighter from the northeastern province of Nakorn Ratchasima, is one of 10-20 boxers who for the past month have had to cut out exercises that can't be done in the ring but come for three-hour workouts every morning and afternoon.

Don, 31, said the flooding was a distraction, but he wouldn't allow it to affect his fighting, despite the water swelling and peeling the skin on his feet. But he admitted to some worry.

"I'm scared the water is going to rise even more," he said.

(AP) ? Jurors hearing the involuntary manslaughter case against Michael Jackson's doctor will hear an alternate version Friday of what may have occurred in the singer's bedroom in the hours before his death.

Dr. Paul White, an expert in the anesthetic propofol, will finally lay out his rationale for the defense theory that Jackson somehow gave himself a fatal dose of the drug when his doctor left the room.

White's testimony will likely be vigorously challenged by prosecutors, who spent four weeks laying out their case that Dr. Conrad Murray is a greedy, inept and reckless doctor who was giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid. But cross-examination of White will be delayed until Monday to give prosecutors more time to review a new analysis prepared by the defense based on recently-conducted tests on samples taken during Jackson's autopsy.

"This is the entire crux of the defense case," Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said in arguing for a delay.

The judge hearing the case, which ends its fifth week on Friday, reluctantly agreed to delay the cross examination and said he is concerned about losing jurors. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor however noted that the panel of has remained rapt throughout the trial.

"Every single member of that jury and all the alternates are paying extraordinary attention to every witness," Pastor said.

Murray has pleaded not guilty.

White's opinions will challenge those of the prosecution's main expert, Dr. Steven Shafer, who testified that the only scenario he believes explains Jackson's death is that Murray placed Jackson on an IV drip and left the room after he thought the singer was sleeping peacefully.

Murray told police he left Jackson's bedside, but claims he only gave the singer a small dose of propofol the morning of Jackson's death. He said he left the room and returned after two minutes to find the pop superstar unresponsive.

Murray's defense attorneys have repeatedly claimed that Jackson somehow gave himself the fatal dose, but it will be up to White to explain how that would be possible.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said that the new models White will show jurors on Friday will offer different simulations about the drugs propofol and sedative lorazepam. They are based on a new computer program and updated test results.

Flanagan did not reveal what conclusions White drew from the new models, or whether they would change his testimony.

White is a retired researcher and professor who performed clinical studies of propofol for years before it was approved for usage by the Food and Drug Administration in 1989. He said he was initially reluctant to become involved in the case, but after reading through more than a dozen expert reports, he couldn't figure out how others came to the conclusion that Murray would have had to leave Jackson on a propofol IV drip for the singer to have died with the anesthetic still coursing through his body.

He said the others' theories didn't make sense based on Murray's statement to police.

"I thought that there were questions if in fact Murray had administered the drugs that he described in his conversations with the police department in the doses he described, I would not have expected Michael Jackson to have died," White said.

He continued to work on the case after meeting with Murray, although White was not allowed to testify about his conversations with the Houston-based cardiologist.

Flanagan early in White's testimony on Thursday asked the doctor to address "the elephant in the room" ? whether he could justify Murray's actions if he left Jackson hooked to a propofol IV and then left the room.

"Absolutely not," White replied.

Nathan Manske: True LGBTQ Stories: After Facing Death, Woman Faces Her Own Sexuality

I'm From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit forum for true lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer stories. Earlier this year, founder and Executive Director Nathan Manske and two companions successfully completed a four-month, 50-state Story Tour collecting LGBTQ stories from towns and cities across the country. They're pulling some of the most relevant, important and sometimes just enjoyable stories from their archives and sharing them with HuffPost Gay Voices.

Living your life openly and honestly as an LGBTQ person -- or any person, for that matter -- doesn't just lead to a happier life; sometimes it can actually save it. After years of hiding who she truly was, Ashley Jackson, from Brandon, Miss., was depressed and turned to what many people in her situation turn to: alcohol. As Ashley explained to me in her story:

It was easy to drink all the time, and that was one thing I could control in my life. I couldn't, you know, control the feelings I had for women, I couldn't control what other people would think about me being in a relationship with a woman, but I could drink, and that made me fun, and that made it easier to date guys, or to be in reckless relationships, and unprotected sex and being promiscuous, and all of these things.

On Christmas Eve -- Ashley's birthday -- a woman she was dating convinced her to go to another party after they'd been drinking. After an argument between the two, Ashley attempted to drive herself home.

I passed out, driving on the interstate. I was not wearing a seatbelt, and I fell into the passenger seat as I was driving, and I remember telling myself, "OK, Ashley, you're driving, you need to get up." And when I did that, I used my left hand on the wheel as leverage to pull myself up, and did that, and I jerked the car to the left and went over four lanes on the interstate and smashed into a concrete guard rail. I don't know how long I was there. I don't know who found me. But I ended up in the hospital for over a week. I had shattered my left ankle. I had 50-plus stitches in my face and had to move back in with my mom.

Facing death and becoming dependant on her mom again forced Ashley to face the issue that almost killed her.

If that's not a wake up call, I don't know what is. I realized I was hiding from who I was born to be, and I couldn't do that anymore. I couldn't live my life for other people anymore. And I told myself, "Okay, you're gay."

Injured vet spent day at work, nights at protest (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? The Iraq War veteran injured during a clash between police and anti-Wall Street protesters this week wasn't taking part in the demonstrations out of economic need.

The 24-year-old Scott Olsen makes a good living as a network engineer and has a nice apartment overlooking San Francisco Bay. And yet, his friends say, he felt so strongly about economic inequality in the United States that he fought for overseas that he slept at a protest camp after work.

"He felt you shouldn't wait until something is affecting you to get out and do something about it," said friend and roommate Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq.

It was that feeling that drew him to Oakland on Tuesday night, when the clashes broke out and Olsen's skull was fractured. Fellow veterans said Olsen was struck in the head by a projectile fired by police, although the exact object and who might have been responsible for the injury have not been definitively established.

Now, even as officials investigate exactly where the projectile came from, Olsen has become a rallying cry for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators across the nation, with Twitter users and protest websites declaring: "We are all Scott Olsen."

In Las Vegas, a few dozen protesters held a vigil for him. A handful of police officers attended, and protesters invited them back for a potluck dinner Thursday night.

"We renewed our vow of nonviolence," organizer Sebring Frehner said.

Another round of vigils were organized for Thursday night, including one in Oakland.

Elsewhere across the United States, officials took steps to close some of the protest camps that have sprung up in opposition to growing economic inequality.

In Nashville, Tennessee, officials imposed a curfew, saying conditions at a camp at the state Capitol were worsening. In Providence, Rhode Island, officials told protesters they were violating multiple city laws by camping overnight at a park.

The group Iraq Veterans Against the War blamed police for Olsen's injury. Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said officials will investigate whether officers used excessive force. He did not return calls seeking comment on Thursday.

Police have said they responded with tear gas and bean bag rounds only when protesters began throwing bottles and other items at them.

Olsen's condition improved on Thursday, with doctors transferring him from the emergency room to an intensive care unit and upgrading his condition to fair.

Dr. Alden Harken, chief surgeon at Alameda County Medical Center, said Olsen had improved dramatically since he was hospitalized unconscious Tuesday night with a fractured skull and bruised brain that caused seizures.

By Thursday afternoon, Harken says, the 24-year-old Olsen was interacting with his parents, who flew in from Wisconsin in the morning, doing math equations and otherwise showing signs of "high-level cognitive functioning." The doctor said he may require surgery, but that's unlikely.

"He's got a relatively small area of injury and he's got his youth going for him. So both of those are very favorable," Harken said.

Olsen smiled when Mayor Jean Quan stopped by to visit and expressed surprise at all the attention his injury has generated, hospital spokesman Vintage Foster said. The mayor apologized and promised an investigation, according to Foster.

His uncle in Wisconsin told The Associated Press that Olsen's mother was trying to understand what had happened.

"This is obviously a heartbreaker to her," George Nygaard said. "I don't think she understands why he was doing this."

On Tuesday night, Olsen had planned to be at the San Francisco protest, but he changed course after his veterans' group decided to support protesters in Oakland after police cleared an encampment outside City Hall.

"I think it was a last minute thing," Shannon said.

Joshua Shepherd, 27, a Navy veteran who was standing nearby when Olsen got struck, said he didn't know what hit him. "It was like a war zone," he said.

A video posted on YouTube showed Olsen being carried by other protesters through the tear gas, his face bloodied. People shout at him: "What's your name? What's your name?" Olsen just stares back.

Shepherd said it's a cruel irony that Olsen is fighting an injury in the country that he fought to protect.

People at OPSWAT, the San Francisco security software company where Olsen works, were devastated after learning of his injuries. They described him as a humble, quiet man.

Olsen had been helping to develop security applications for U.S. defense agencies, building on expertise gained while on active duty in Iraq, said Jeff Garon, the company's director of marketing.

Olsen was awarded seven medals while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, which he left as a lance corporal in November 2009 after serving for four years. One of them was the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Olsen moved to the Bay Area in July, and quickly found friends in the veterans against the war group.

His tours of duty in Iraq made him more serious, Shannon said.

"He wasn't active in politics before he went in the military, but he became active once he was out ... the experience in the military definitely shaped him," Shannon said.

Pennsylvania declares fiscal emergency in Harrisburg (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett declared a fiscal emergency for Harrisburg on Monday, putting the state one step closer to a takeover of its capital city.

Harrisburg, which has more than $300 million in debt linked to a revamp of its incinerator, declared bankruptcy earlier this month. Last week, Corbett, who opposed the bankruptcy filing, approved a bill that creates a framework for a state takeover of Harrisburg's finances.

The declaration will ensure that "vital municipal services are maintained," Corbett said in a statement.

Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson and the city council have both opposed the state's takeover legislation.

Harrisburg is one of a handful of U.S. cities that has faced fiscal collapse. In recent years, two other cities -- Vallejo, California filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and Rhode Island's tiny city of Central Falls went bankrupt earlier this year.

Still municipal bankruptcies remain rare.

Corbett has said Harrisburg would have been better off if it agreed to a rescue plan under the state's Act 47 program for distressed cities -- which has seen Philadelphia and other cities through crises.

In July, the Harrisburg City Council rejected a state-approved rescue plan, which called on Harrisburg to renegotiate labor deals, cut jobs, and sell or lease the city's major assets -- its parking garages and the incinerator. In August, the Council rejected a similar plan put forward by the mayor.

In making the declaration, Corbett directed the state Department of Community and Economic Development to develop an emergency action plan within 10 days to ensure that vital services -- including police and firefighting, water and waste water, trash collection, payroll, and pension and debt payments -- are not interrupted.

"During a fiscal emergency, the city's authorities and elected officials will continue to carry out the duties of their respective offices as long as no decision or action conflicts with the emergency action plan," the statement said.

The next hearing on Harrisburg's bankruptcy filing is scheduled to be held November 23.

Siri ported to iPad, still getting silent treatment from Apple servers

Developers wasted no time bringing Siri to the iPhone 4, and nine days later, it's been brought to the iPad as well. This version, running on a first-generation jailbroken Apple tablet, suffers from a similar problem as past non-iPhone 4S ports: it's still not talking to Apple's data servers. This means that until devs manage to get voice commands recognized and initiated, the iPad's unofficial virtual assistant will remain effectively gagged.

Christopher A. Ochoa, a 20-year-old from French Camp, Calif., and his friend, Raymond Westrom, 53, were hiking through a field in Western Oregon on the way to Silver Creek Falls Park on Friday evening. Ochoa was wearing dark-colored clothing.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says a 67-year-old Oregon man hunting for bear with his 12-year-old grandson saw something moving in the brush and fired one shot from a .270-caliber rifle, striking Ochoa.

The sheriff's office says the hunter, Gene Collier, hasn't been charged, but turned the case over to the local district attorney's office.

Ochoa was alive when deputies arrived, but died at the scene.

Ochoa and Westrom had traveled to Salem to do work on a house before their hiking trip, Ochoa?s family told investigators, The Oregonian reported.

Serif PhotoPlus X5

Serif's PhotoPlus X5 can't decide whether it wants to be your Photoshop or your Photoshop Elements (or Corel PaintShop Pro, for that matter). The product offers some powerful and complex image enhancement tools like the former, but an organizer app and lots of guidance like the former, which it's also closer to in price, at $89.99. The problem is that PhotoPlus can't match the Adobe products in either domain. While this latest version adds some catch-up features like a "vibrance" enhancement and a little more in the way of organizational tools, it still feels dated, and still trails Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 ($99.99, 4 stars, EC) and Corel PaintShop Pro X4 ($79.99, 3.5 stars).

Interface
Like Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, PhotoPlus uses two separate applications to handle the organizing and editing functions?the Organizer and the full PhotoPlus edit. And it takes this segmentation a few steps further, with separate app windows for "PhotoFix" (see below), photo projects, and more. I do like the Organizer's simple left sidebar, which can switch between showing dates, folders, tags, and ratings or the selected photo's metadata. Along the top are buttons that take you to the full editor or to a PhotoFix simple photo improver as well as rotation, sharing, and view options.

As I found with Photoshop Elements 10, PhotoPlus couldn't enlarge an image to larger than the window for a closer look in Organizer. Another quibble is that when you click the button to launch a picture into the full editor, the latter's window doesn't open automatically if you've already opened it, as Photoshop Elements' does. Better still would be an integrated organizer/editor like Corel PaintShop Pro X4's.

The full PhotoPlus editor interface, though slightly improved, is still cluttered, with its three rows of menus and toolbars on top, button bar and panel on the sides, and photo tray on the bottom. Granted, you can turn off the panels, but the interface still looks dated, even down to its light gray background, which modern photo editors have replaced with a nearly black interface to let the photos shine.

PhotoPlus is noticeably slower than Photoshop Elements 10 or Corel PaintShop Pro X4, whether in performing an adjustment or effect or just in displaying a high megapixel image at full resolution.? Some common controls are missing from easily accessible view: There's no zoom slider or revert buttons, though these are available in menus, both are more conveniently handled in competing programs.

Importing and Organizing Photos
The PhotoPlus X5 installation process doesn't add an import option to Windows' AutoPlay dialog that pops up when you plug camera media into a PC as most photo software does, but a highly visible Import button at top left of the app's toolbar makes it clear how to get started. PhotoPlus's Organizer had no trouble importing from a DSLR, but ARW and CR2 raw image previews didn't show up in the importer. They were later visible in the Organizer, however.? And the importer wouldn't find images on an iPhone 4S, though Google Picasa on the same system had no trouble doing so.? PhotoPlus does let you tag on import and choose filename sequences, but so do the others.

The simple Organizer interface let me do the standard star ratings, tagging, rotating, and stacking. The last, which lets you stack similar photos, is new for this version, but it doesn't automatically group images as competitors do, and the resulting stacked images don't look much like an actual stack, as they do in other apps. I could also create smart albums based on date range, size, and tags. In a surprising plus, a Google Maps mashup built into the program let me geo-tag photos and show their location on a map, and even correctly found iPhone photos' location based on GPS data embedded in the image files. But alas, there's no face recognition, the must-have organization tool of state-of-the art consumer photo editing software.

When you import raw camera files, PhotoPlus takes much longer than competitors like Photoshop Elements 10 or Corel PaintShop X4 to resolve the photo on screen to its full resolution--you just see a highly pixelated version for several seconds first. Before you open camera raw images in the PhotoPlus editor, you stop at the Raw Studio window, where you can adjust white balance, exposure and black point, as well as reducing image noise and chromatic aberration. Split views let you see before and after for these operations, which actually exceed what you can do in PhotoShop Elements 10. But on one test in importing Canon CR2 raw files, the result in the editor was poor quality, noisy images?worse than appeared in the organizer?and that was without changing anything in the Raw Studio.

Basic Photo Editing and Corrections
Before you even get to the full editor app, you can get to work on an image in the PhotoFix windows, accessible from a clear button atop the Organizer's window.? But this tool?and PhotoPlus as a whole?lacks the simplest photo corrector of all: Auto fix. I can't remember reviewing a photo app that didn't include this type of best-guess button; perhaps Serif doesn't think these worthwhile, but even pro tools like Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture include Auto-tone, which often gets you a good ways towards optimizing an image.

PhotoFix does offer presets to change lighting and color ("Intense, Warmer), and offers fixes like cropping, red-eye correction, blemish removal. But it also offers advanced stuff like curves, HSL, lens distortion. Though Serif claims that PhotoPlus is a non-destructive editor, meaning your changes don't overwrite the originals, I didn't find this to be the case unless I specifically used layers in the advanced editor interface.? Changes I made were saved to the original file: The competitors create a new file type when you save edits and create a database file of just the changes you make, so that you can always return to the original image data.

GOP speed daters ready to go steady with Romney? (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Michele Bachmann's moment came and went. Chris Christie was a no-show. Rick Perry faded. Now folks are waiting for the Herman Cain boomlet to go bust. Could it be that Republican voters are done speed-dating and ready to go steady with Mitt Romney?

Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and other what-about-me candidates are hoping that the meh-about-Mitt crowd may still be ready to check out someone else.

It's been that kind of year, after all, with first one candidate and then another capturing the party's attention ? for a time.

Remember when Bachmann surged to victory in the Iowa straw poll? When Christie's big tease that he might join the race captivated the party? When Perry still pulsed with Texas swagger?

Why not check out me next? the long-shot candidates reason.

After all, Santorum has been looking tough lately, Gingrich has turned in some thoughtful debate performances, Ron Paul's got a new ad blitz, and Jon Huntsman's pushing hard in New Hampshire.

And Romney, even with a big bump in his favorability ratings of late, still hasn't been able to generate much enthusiasm among GOP voters.

Republican strategist Mark McKinnon thinks GOP voters will "keep on looking right up until prom night."

"They like shopping around and the alternatives to Romney in theory, but when it gets to be more than just about lunch, the voters so far have been disappointed and let down," McKinnon says.

The idea that Republicans may still be willing to look around is what motivates Santorum, Huntsman and other candidates who are polling in the single digits to head out the door each morning to yet another town hall, Rotary club or fundraiser. They're vigorously challenging the top-tier candidates, sniping at President Barack Obama and keeping the debate stages crowded.

"I don't need a poll to tell us that we're moving up," Huntsman enthuses in New Hampshire.

Gingrich, who's kept his focus trained on what he considers Obama's shortcomings, has a new ad offering himself as "the right candidate at just the right time."

Paul is plowing $2 million into early primary state ads that dismiss his GOP rivals as big spenders beholden to Wall Street.

Santorum, whose tough talk has made him stand out in recent debates, is questioning Cain's credentials as a true conservative. And Perry, hoping to regain his stride, has been particularly aggressive in going after Romney in recent debates.

But Cain, whose popularity surged in recent weeks, isn't ready to cede the spotlight ? even if he's been widely dismissed as just the latest "flavor of the month."

Cain's comeback: "Haagen-Dazs black walnut tastes good all the time."

Huntsman, a former Utah governor, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, are the only two GOP candidates who remain unknown to large numbers of Republicans, and that means they've got the widest opening to change opinions.

So it's sort of good news that 53 percent of Republicans don't have an opinion about Huntsman, and 48 percent don't have an opinion about Santorum.

Just about everybody's already got an opinion about Gingrich, by contrast. But the former House speaker has made some headway recently in shifting people from the negative to positive column.

Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, a veteran of multiple presidential campaigns, thinks Cain is destined to fade. The former pizza executive and his 9-9-9 tax plan have been coming under tough scrutiny since voters sent his stock rising.

But Shrum throws cold water on the idea that any of the GOP also-rans will be the next big thing, supplanting Cain.

"There are very limited outcomes here," Shrum says. "If Perry gets a bounce in the next week or two, then he's alive again and he could become a real alternative.

"In the absence of that," says Shrum, "Romney has to be the nominee ? unless the party completely loses its mind."

Selena Gomez Goes Gangster In MTV EMA Promo

'People know who the eff I is,' the show's host raps in a video for next month's MTV Europe Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

Selena Gomez

When Selena Gomez served as MTV News' special correspondent at the Video Music Awards Pre-Show in August, she was polite, professional and, as far as we can tell, did not utter a single profanity (she did get kissed by her boyfriend, Justin Bieber, though).

But in preparation for her hosting duties at next month's MTV EMA, she's decided to change things up a bit, ditching that good-girl image and going hard. At least judging by a brand-new promo for the show, that is.

Gomez ties on a bandana and throws on a flannel (only top button buttoned, of course) in the new spot, which spoofs her squeaky-clean image and features the demure actress/singer spitting some (sorta-profane) rhymes. It opens with her in full-blown princess regalia, sitting before a vanity and proclaiming to her reflection "Finally, I get to host the EMAs ... wow!"

All of sudden, her thugged-out alter ego appears on the other side of the mirror, tells Selena to "shut her face," and then launches into a few bars, rapping, "Who else better than me to be hosting the show/ People know who the eff I is/ I'm a pro/ The right time and place for me to be/ Yeah, I'll say it/ Congratulations to me!"

Gangster Gomez (or, as she puts it, "The S-E-L-E-N-A to the Gomez"), then gets all Kanye confessional on the mic, rapping that "Sh--'s crazy growing up in this industry/ I was still a baby when I hustled up into the scene" and then drops what sounds very much like a solid F-bomb too. Like we said, she goes hard.

Of course, the whole thing is a joke -- according to a message at the beginning of the spot, "Some of the Selenas in this video are fictional. Any similarities to the actual Selena are purely coincidental" -- but, as MTV's Buzzworthy blog points out, her hip-hop makeover does present a rather unique opportunity for Gomez: Now, perhaps she can drop a mixtape with Shawty Mane, a.k.a. Bieber's rapping alter ego. We'd totally cop that.

The MTV EMA will premiere on Tr3s: MTV, Música y Más at 6 p.m. ET on November 6 and noon on mtvU on November 7. American and Canadian audiences can vote for the North American nominee for the Worldwide Act award, who will represent the continent at the EMA against contenders from across the globe.

For a complete list of nominees and to vote for your favorite artists, check out the MTV EMA website. Stick with MTV News as we roll out more information on performers and presenters.

Family of 4 found dead in suburban NYC home

(AP) ? A family of four was found dead in their sprawling home in an affluent suburb after what appeared to be a murder-suicide, state police said.

The bodies of Amy and Sam Friedlander and their children, 8-year-old Gregory and 10-year-old Molly, were discovered in their four-bedroom, blue-gray, Colonial-style house in Cross River on Tuesday afternoon, according to police Maj. Michael Kopy.

A neighbor told WCBS-TV (http://tinyurl.com/3wenopm) that the couple was getting a divorce.

On Wednesday, police parked their vehicles in front of the home and challenged anyone who tried to linger; crime-scene tape was grimly stretched across the driveway.

The Journal News (http://tinyurl.com/3hxp9m3) cited a May 2000 wedding announcement in The New York Times that described Amy Friedlander as a vice president for Chase Manhattan Bank. It said she most recently was a partner in an academic and college test prep tutoring service.

The wedding announcement said her husband was an associate counsel of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Manhattan.

The neighborhood, called Michelle Estates, was developed by financier Carl Icahn and has homes valued at around $800,000 to $1 million, the Journal News reported.

The Friedlanders' home, listed for sale at $799,000, is located on a long, looping road that features some even larger houses on elegantly landscaped properties. But it's clearly a family neighborhood: Some residents have decorated for Halloween, with pumpkins on their porches and fake spider webs across the shrubs.

The Lewisboro school district said the children attended its elementary school.

Lewisboro Police Chief Frank Secret said he knew of no reports of domestic violence.

"This is devastating in our community," he said. "This is something we are not used to."

Caroline Manzo Calls Out Teresa Giudice, Addresses "Miserable" RHONJ Reunion

Part one of the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion special last Sunday night was so contentious, it was almost as if cast members had been told what to say and how to act. That's totally ridiculous, of course, we know.

The harshest exchanges took place between Caroline Manzo and Teresa Giudice, as the former went after the latter's marriage and financial woes, among other topics. Does Caroline have any regrets?

A Real Housewives Reunion

Not really. In a new blog entry, Manzo says the experience was "miserable," but "I was telling the truth... I couldn't hide my feelings. I didn't see why I should at this point."

Among specific topics addressed by Caroline online:

Her reference to Teresa's cookbook as being as Italian as the Olive Garden: "We joked [about that], but here's the difference - we didn't joke about my son, Melissa, Kathy or Richie... To use my words as a defense against your insulting remarks towards my son is unbelievable. Apology not accepted."

Caroline's relationship with sister Dina: "Congratulations, Teresa, the only thing you succeeded in doing was hurting my parents. What a fool I've been in my efforts to bring your family together when it was your intent to destroy mine from the start. Shame on you."

Her overall reaction to the argument: "Unlike you, Teresa, I can look in the mirror and hold my head high knowing that I have always given the best of myself to my family and friends. I live my life with integrity and self-respect."

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google? [Lifehacker Showdown]

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google?Among the big enhancements to iOS 5 is Apple's new iCloud suite, which keeps your mail, contacts, calendars, documents, and other data stored in the cloud and synced to all your Apple devices. Most people currently use Google services for these features, so we played with iCloud for a few days and looked at how they stacked up against one another. Here's what we found.

The Service-By-Service Breakdown

Both suites are actually pretty good. It's no secret we love Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and other Google service around here, but if you're an Apple user, iCloud is pretty tempting. Each individual service has its own strengths and weaknesses. Here are the big services in each service and how they stack up against one another.

Storage

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google? One of the biggest differences between both suites is the amount of storage you get. iCloud gives you 5GB for free, for all iCloud services?that means if you fill up that space with documents, you could stop receiving email, and if you get email with huge attachments, you might run out of space for documents or photos. Google, on the other hand, gives you lots more space for free, and splits it up by service: Gmail gets a little over 7GB for free, Google Docs gives you 1GB for uploaded files (but mostly unlimited space for web-created documents), and 1GB of space for high-res photos in Picasa.

You can grab extra storage for iCloud and Google, though Google's prices are significantly better. $20 a year will get you 10GB extra space with iCloud, but it'll get you 80GB of extra space on Google. Check out Google's pricing page and Apple's pricing page for more info.

Mail vs. Gmail

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google?Mail's web interface is surprisingly iOS-like, even moreso than Lion's version of Mail. You have three panes, like a traditional mail client, but it has large buttons and only a few options. In fact, it looks nearly identical to the screens you'd get on the iOS version of Mail. Luckily, the buttons along the top include both Archive and Delete, something you don't get with Gmail on iOS. Frustratingly, Gmail only allows you to archive or delete messages, but it doesn't give you the option to put both buttons in your toolbar. iCloud handles this like a champ, making productive email management a lot easier and faster.

Of course, it isn't without downsides. The web version of Mail is extremely basic, and even assuming you use Mail.app in OS X to manage your email, you'll miss out on a lot of the advanced features Gmail has to offer. Whether it's the increased organizational powers of labels over folers, super-powerful search operators, the ability to "send as" another email address, or even even the many Gmail labs like Send & Archive, Apple's iteration of email is a bit less feature rich. Gmail's spam filtering is also a big feature that you probably use, but don't even notice?and iCloud won't have that. If you were using Mail.app to manage your email anyway, you probably won't miss most of Gmail's advanced features. Just know they won't be available to you, even on the web, if you use iCloud.

iCal vs. Google Calendar

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google? The two calendar apps are much more similar. Both allow you to create multiple calendars, color-code them, and attach reminders. iCloud misses out on a few of the smaller features?like assigning an event as "busy" or "free" time, but overall all the basics are the same. The big difference is in shared calendars: In iCloud, you can only collaborate on a calendar with other iCloud users. Google Calendar users can only collaborate with Google users, too, but it's likely that you know more people using Google Calendar than iCloud, so this is a disadvantage for iCloud. You can still add shared Google calendars to iCal. Also note that you can still share iCloud calendars with Google users, but they'll be read-only, so you'll still be the only one able to edit them.

iCloud Address Book vs. Google Contacts

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google? There isn't a huge difference between the two contacts apps. iCloud's address book looks almost exactly like OS X Lion's version of Address Book, only in a larger window. If you really dig down into Address Book, you may notice that Google's contact system?since it runs on Exchange?can't sync certain fields. For example, it only supports "Manager", "Spouse", and "Supervisor" in the relationship field, which can make things like Siri a bit less useful. It's minor, but it is a downside.

The biggest problem between the two is that iCloud requires?for unknown reasons?that you only sync with iCloud. That means you can't sync your Google contacts and iCloud contacts with your Mac's address book simultaneously, which can be very annoying if you want to use both. However, few people really need this feature, and like I said, iCloud's address book is potentially more powerful anyway, so it shouldn't be a huge burden.

Documents in the Cloud vs. Google Docs

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google?iCloud's competitor to Google Docs is "Documents in the Cloud", a service that keeps your Pages, Keynote, and Numbers documents in sync between all your iOS devices and the web. However, instead of being a web-based suite of apps, it's merely storage space from which you can download and upload documents. Anything you create in Pages, Numbers, or Keynote on iOS can automatically be saved in the cloud, and your other iOS devices will always have the most up-to-date version of that document. If you want to edit it on your computer, you can go to the iCloud web interface and download any of those documents for editing with your favorite desktop office program.

This may sound like a downside, but it makes the process easy enough that it really isn't a problem?and, in the end, your desktop office suite is probably much more full-featured than something like Google Docs would be. iCloud's interface for storing your documents is very nice, and you can download a document with the click of a button. When you're done editing it in Pages, Word, LibreOffice, or whatever else you choose, you can just drag it back into the web interface and it will replace the older file. It's incredibly simple, yet gives you the flexibility to easily use whatever office suite you want. It's only downside is that it requires you buy iWork for iOS, which is $10 for each app?even if you only want to sync those documents between your computers. Though really, if you're just syncing between computers, we recommend you just use something like Dropbox anyways.

The big advantage of Google Docs is the ability to edit documents right in the web interface, and collaborate on them with other people. You don't get any of those great collaboration features in iCloud, and you can't upload files of any type to iCloud like you can with Google Docs. Like the other services, it all depends on what's important to you. If you need the collaborative features of Google Docs, iCloud won't be able to replace it, but as far as cloud document storage and syncing goes, iCloud does a fine job.

Photos and iTunes in the Cloud vs. Picasa and Google Music

Should I Switch to iCloud From Google?Photos and music work a bit differently in iCloud than other services, so it's hard to compare the two. Your photos and music aren't actually stored in the cloud, for you to view from anywhere?iCloud just makes them available to all your iOS devices. Any photos you take on your device will automatically show up in your computer's photo library, and vice-versa. But, you won't be able to view or share them on the web. Similarly, iTunes in the Cloud will automatically send new purchased music to all of your devices. It'll also come with iTunes Match, which will make most of your computer's library available for download on all your devices for $24.99 a year. Again, though, you won't be able to access that music from the web or stream it?you can only download it to your other iOS devices. Thus, if you rely on Picasa or Google Music to make that media available to you everywhere, you probably don't want to give it up for iCloud just yet. If you don't use them, though, iCloud can make syncing your devices a lot easier.

The Verdict

After using iCloud for awhile, our conclusion is pretty much what we expected: Google's services definitely win in terms of features, but when it comes to integration with your Mac and iOS devices, iCloud obviously has an edge. In the end, it's pretty easy to determine whether you should switch: If you use your Google services on the desktop, with programs like Mail, iCal, and iWork, then you should definitely switch. Everything will work a bit better than you're used to (especially email), and you probably won't miss anything from Google's services, since you can't access those extra features in desktop programs anyway. If you use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and others on the web, thn moving to iCloud could feel like a big downgrade.
